Medical transcription is listening to dictated reports and typing them in the computer using different types of word processing software. Career opportunities include hospitals, medical group practices, health maintenance organizations, clinics, home health agencies nursing homes, insurance agencies, large metropolitan laboratory, veterinarian offices, legal offices, and working from your home.

All students will receive CPR certification training as part of this program and will take the Brain Bench TSA certification for this field.

Entry into most occupations related to this program's field of study does not require national and/or state licensure or have any unique requirements for advancement. Medical Transcription certification is available through the Association for Healthcare Documentation Intregity (AHDI) once the student has worked in the field a number of years. However,certification is not required in order to enter the field. Students seeking employment as a coder must obtain an advanced degree in Health Information.

  • Fifty hour internship at a local health care clinic

Program Length

The program is nine months in length.  Classes meet Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. at the Hillyard Technical Center. Academic year/completion = 900 hours, 35 weeks. High school students will complete this program over two years. Program Admission Requirements

Post-Secondary applicants must meet/submit the following requirements:

  • Type a minimum of 35 wpm
  • Be 17 years or older
  • Complete and submit an HTC Application for Admission Form by deadline
  • Have a high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate
  • Submit an official transcript from high school or post-secondary institution
  • Three professional references
  • ACT WorkKeys exam

Secondary students (still in high school) must enroll through their high school counselor.
