This program is for students who want to work on refrigeration, air conditioning or heating units and systems for Cooling and Heating Contractors, Fuel Oil Dealers, School Systems, or Manufacturing Plants. |
Program Overview
Students will learn soldering and brazing, basic electrical, electrical controls for HVACR, air conditioning theory, assembly, and troubleshooting problems within the system, and treatment and conditioning of the air surrounding our environment. Students will also learn basic sheet metal techniques.
This program also covers plumbing and pipe fitting, troubleshooting electrical and mechanical problems, gas and electrical furnaces, heat pumps, air flow calculations and adjustments, load calculations, determining equipment size for a job site. and customer relations skills.
Second year high school students who are in good standing and have completed the majority of their competencies may be allowed to find and work a job in the field during the 4th quarter of their studies. This "on the job" training and internship gives the student job experience and the ability to earn some income. The students are required to report to their instructors and turn in a weekly time sheet documenting their experience.
Heating Ventilation Air conditioning and Refrigeration students are allowed to take the following exams through Esco Institute and HVAC Excellence:
- HVAC Excellence Electrical Employment Ready
- EPA Section 608 exam
- R410A Safety exam
- HVAC Excellence Gas H.E.A.T exam
The following are requirements for employment in the field of HVACR:
- Must be capable of lifting 50 pounds
- Be able to climb ladders
- Have a valid state issued driver's license
- Have the ability to work in various temperature environments
- Job applicants must pass a drug screen test
Entry into an occupation related to this program's field of study may not require national and/or state licensure.

Program Length

Program Admission Requirements
It is preferred (but not required) that students have maintained a C or better in Algebra, understand fractions and decimals, and read and comprehend on a 10th grade reading level.
Program only available to high school students; must enroll through their high school counselor.
